Florence Evelyn Orten Smith passed away in Quinter, Kansas at the Long Term Care Facility on Monday, July 12, 2010 at the age of 87. She was born December 10, 1922 in Grainfield, Kansas, the fifth of six children of George R. and Eva Alice Weekly Orten. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, her sister, Vera Roberts on May 10, 2010, four nephews and two nieces. She is survived by one brother, William L. Orten, Quinter, KS, two nephews and two nieces. Florence married Roderick "Rod" Smith on November 22, 1941, in Shields, Kansas, at the home of their pastor's parents. Rod passed away April 30, 1984. She attended school in Grainfield, graduating from Grainfield Rural High School with the class of 1940. a After her short career as a domestic and baby sitter, she moved in 1941 to Dighton, Kansas, where she worked at the Pwonka Café, later at Egbert's Drug Store, then at the Dighton and Scott City sale barns as an office clerk. She also worked at the Oakley sale barn where her husband was auctioneer. Florence and Rod moved to Oakley in 1951 and to Scott City in 1955. In Scott City, she worked as bookkeeper for Western Hardware and Supply and then for Scott City Clinic, followed by the Brookover Cattle Company, Inc., from which she retired in 1990 after twenty years as office manager. Florence enjoyed working with the public. She was a life member of the Eastern Star, Dighton Chapter. Following cremation, graveside services and burial will be at the Healy Cemetery on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. James Brackett and Pastor Keith Funk presiding. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to the Scott County Library or Shriner's Children's Hospital in care of the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas
