Maxine Mercer Porter, age 89, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2007 in Denver, Colorado. She was born on March 2, 1918 in Ness County, Kansas, the daughter of Charles William and Janie A. Parks Bird. Maxine was a vital member of the Garden City community for over 40 years. She owned and operated a farm in Haskell County and was active in the Methodist Church. Upon the death of her first husband, Clyde Mercer, Maxine endowed the Garden City Community College with funds for the Mercer Gallery and Scholarship Fund.
