Gregory E. Long, 42, of Cuernavaca, Mexico, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Hospital Morelos in Cuernavaca due to septic shock as a result of complications from food poisoning.
Greg was born December 1, 1966, in Scott City, KS, to Donna A. and the late Kenneth E. Long.
Greg received bachelor degrees in electrical engineering and secondary education from Kansas State University. Upon graduation, he taught at Olathe North High School, Olathe, KS, for over five years while simultaneously acquiring a master's degree in educational leadership from Kansas University.
He was the founder/owner of ideaPort, which began in 1995 as Teacher's Pet Software. The small company developed a security application that locked down the Windows desktop, giving teachers and librarians the ability to protect their computers from the nimble fingers and prying minds of their clever students. In 1996 the company changed its name to ideaPort. In 2000 the company shifted its primary focus from building desktop applications to developing Web applications. The company developed and maintained award-winning Web sites.
He also instructed and developed courses for Learning Tree International, a world leader in hands-on training for managers and information technology professionals.
In life, Greg loved sharing good times with family and friends. He was an extremely generous son, brother, and friend who loved to travel, adored his pets, had a great personality and sense of humor, could fix just about anything, and was a brilliant programmer and whiz with computers. He loved to entertain and often served as the event coordinator, host, and photographer for many parties and gatherings. He followed his dream and moved to Mexico full time in 2001.
Those left to cherish Greg's memory are mother, Donna Long of Scott City, KS; brother Curtis of Cuernavaca, Mexico; sister Shelley and son Kyle of Kansas City, MO; brother Steven and wife, Elizabeth, and children, Jordan and Sawyer, of Winterport, ME. Greg is also survived by many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Jennifer Ann.
