John Arthur Bryan, Jr. age 98, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on February 9, 1911 in Wichita County, Kansas, the son of John A. Sr. and Ora W. Jordan Bryan.
He attended his first two years of school a Halcyon school in Wichita County, and then 3rd through 8th grade in Leoti, Kansas graduating in 1928. He received his B.S. degree in 1932 from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. In June of 1932 he moved to Scott City, Kansas to work in at Western Hardware and Supply Co. where he later became manager.
Arthur, his brother, sister, and father acquired the hardware department from Western Hardware in 1947 and named it Bryans Inc. In August of 1973 he sold the business to Keenen Wall when it became Wall's True Value.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Scott City where at a church board meeting on April 26, 1945 he made the motion that they build a new church, which is the current building the church is in. Arthur was also a 75 year member of the Scott City Lions Club. Other memberships included Scott City Chamber of Commerce, KSU Alumni, KSU President Club, Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity, Scott County Historical Society, and the Scott County VIP Center.
Arthur served on the local school board and local city council. He donated the buildings and land for the Garden City Community College Outreach Center in Scott City, which bears his name.
On June 5, 1938 he married Myrtle M. Burditt in Coldwater, Kansas. She passed away on August 8, 1983 in Scott City, Kansas.
Survivors include Two Sons - Thomas Bryan of Jasper, Indiana and Joel Bryan of Scott City, Kansas, Six Grandchildren, and Eleven Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife â Myrtle, One Son â Jon, One Brother â Forrest, and One Sister Vera.
Funeral Services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2009 with the Rev. Dennis Carter presiding.
Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church % Price & Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation will be at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City, Kansas from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Friday.
