W. Dean Harbin, age 80, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Dean was born February 18, 1932 at Mutual, Oklahoma, the son of Wilbur Mitchell & Nellie Blanche Scates Harbin. A 1950 graduate of Mutual, Oklahoma High School and a 1951 graduate of Midwest Business College in Pueblo, Colorado, Dean served his country during the Korean War as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1952 through 1954. Dean was a telegrapher, station agent and customer service representative for Missouri-Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad serving from 1951 and retiring in 1988 and an employee of Price & Sons Funeral Homes. Dean was a member of the United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Emergency Medical Technician Services and the Wichita County Fair worker all of Leoti, Kansas, the Benevolent & Protected Order of the Elks in Texarkana, Texas, American Legion in Garden City, Kansas, the MO-PAC Association, a 50 year member of the Anthem Masonic Lodge # 284 in Scott City, Kansas, the Tribe Booster Club and an avid fan of Wichita County High School and Junior High Activities. He was the Wichita County representative for his fellow servicemen, always attending the funerals of his fallen brethren. On July 15, 1956 he married Dorothy Beatrice Summers at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas. The couple lived in Modoc, Kansas, Leoti, Kansas, St. Joseph, Missouri, Houston, Texas, Texarkana, Texas, and New Orleans, Louisiana before retiring in 1988 and returning to Leoti, Kansas. Dorothy passed away on May 23, 2000 at Leoti, Kansas. Dean's surviving family includes Three Children, Michael Dean & Alicia Harbin of Westminster, Colorado. Michael was born on June 27, 1957, Shelly Joan & Steven Graff of Leoti, Kansas. Shelly was born July 25, 1962 and Mitchell Ted & Lynette Harbin of Maryville, Missouri. Ted was born June 1, 1967. His mother- in- law, Alice Summers of Leoti, Kansas, Eleven grandchildren including Toby Harbin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Brady & Renee Harbin of Leoti, Kansas, Ashley & Tyler Woods of Kansas City, Missouri, Nicole Skalla of Brooklyn, New York, Amber & Brandon Stephens of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kurt & Cheryl Skalla of Blue Rapids, Kansas, Natalie Skalla of Westminster, Colorado, Tori & Jason Koehn of Leoti,Kansas, Kayla Graff of Leoti, Kansas, Laney Graham and Channing Harbin of Maryville, Missouri. Fifteen great grandchildren including Bailey Preedy, Madison Harbin, Colton Harbin, Amelia Koehn, Clara Koehn, Quentin Koehn and Jenna Koehn all of Leoti, Kansas, Spencer Woods of Wichita, Kansas, Cylviana Stephens and Delaina Stephens of Fairbanks, Alaska, Kaylee Skalla, Olivia Skalla and Riley Skalla of Blue Rapids, Kansas, Vela Stephens and Violet Stephens of Westminster, Colorado , Brothers- in- law, Roy & Barb Summers of Advance, North Carolina, Don Summers of Lakin, Kansas, Merle & LouAnn Summers of Blackwell, Oklahoma and Dude & Lucy Summers of Cimarron, Kansas. Sisters-in-law, Helen & Elmer Ridder of Leoti, Kansas, Delora & Gene Stites of Midlothian, Virginia, Bess & Jack Brown of Cottonwood Heights, Utah and Barb & Don Heili of Garden City, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, October 8, 2012, at the United Methodist Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Reverend Mike Howard officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery in Leoti, Kansas with full military honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Detail from Fort Riley, Kansas. Friends may call from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Saturday and from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas with the family in attendance from 2:00 pm through 4:00 pm Sunday. Memorials may be given to the Dean and Dorothy Harbin Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.
