Vera M. Helmers, age 88, passed away on Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Scott County Hospital in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on December 17, 1921 in Cunningham, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence B. and Bertha Cooley Shelman. She grew up in the Cunningham community, attending Maud School and graduating in 1939 from Cunningham High School. After graduating from Pratt Juco, she returned to Maud School as a teacher for two years during World War II and she later worked for Skelly Oil Company at Cunningham. She was a resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1945 moving from Cunningham, Kansas.
She was a charter member of the Community Christian Church in Scott City and had been a member of the Scott County Hospital Auxiliary, Scott County VIP's and both the High Plains and El Quartelejo study clubs.
On November 10, 1945 she married A.R. Helmers in Cunningham, Kansas, He passed away on November 11, 1999 in Scott City, Kansas.
Survivors Include Two Sons - Tim Helmers of Plano, Texas, Greg Helmers and his wife Linda of Scott City, Kansas, Two Grandsons - Grant Helmers and his wife Caroline of Kansas City, MO, Blake Helmers of Manhattan, Kansas, One Granddaughter - Holly Elsey and her husband Bryan of Manhattan, Kansas, One Sister - Lola Swander of Cunningham, Kansas, One Brother - Brad Shelman and his wife Jerri of Andover, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, One Infant Son, Two Brothers â Marvin Shelman and Waldo Shelman and One Sister â Eleanor Graves.
Funeral Services will beheld at the Community Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010 with Troy Schroeder presiding.
Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the Community Christian Church % Price & Sons Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday and 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.
