Roger Dale Hamilton was born October 23, 1922 at South Haven, KS. He departed this life on July 18th, 2016, at age 93. He was lovingly cared for his last few years by nurses and staff at Garden Valley Retirement Village, Hospice, friends and his family.
He was the son of Elsie Louderman and Everett Hamilton and the oldest of five children. He attended rural school graduating from South Haven high school in 1941.
In the fall of 1941 he attended Kansas State University on a Sears and Roebuck scholarship. In March of 1943 he volunteered for the army entering WWII. In March of 1946 he returned from the army and married Grace Venning on September 1st. He finished college with a Masters degree in Agronomy at Kansas State in 1948. From 1948 until 1956 Roger worked in the agriculture field in Amarillo and Lubbock TX, Las Cruces, NM and Chattanooga, TN.
The family moved to Leoti, KS in 1956 where Roger farmed. From 1963 to 1968 he was the vocational agriculture teacher at Wichita County Community High School. From 1968-1988 Roger taught irrigation technology and other courses at GCCC in Garden City.
After retiring he and his wife, Grace, did volunteer work at the US Center for World Mission in Pasadena, CA. and spent three years teaching English in Kyoto, Japan. He also volunteered at St. Catherine Hospital and Hospice, participated in a jail ministry and was a lay pastor in Lakin, KS. During his life he was active at Parks Presbyterian Church, Leoti, KS., Gideons International and Garden Valley Church in Garden City.
Roger was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He always tried to set a good example and lived his Christian faith joyously!
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne (Marc) Cottrell of Garden City, two sons, Kent (Janice) Hamilton of Tallahassee, FL. and Bob (Marge) Hamilton of Wichita, KS. He has five grandsons, Lance (Dana) Woodbury of Garden City, Aaron (Leslie) Woodbury of Aurora, CO, Mark (Brooke) Hamilton of Rome, GA, Jonathan (Deanna) Hamilton of St. John’s Creek, GA and Jason (Jennifer) Hamilton of Monticello, FL. He has two granddaughters, Mari (Chris) Kimbrel of Crawfordville, FL. and Kera (Brian) Murphy of Denver, CO. He has nine great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters. Roger has two sisters, two nephews and three nieces. His parents, his wife, Grace, and two sisters preceded him in death.
Memorial Service in the chapel of Garden Valley Retirement Village, 1505 E. Spruce St., Garden City, KS. at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 25th.
