Lela Bishop

Lela Maxine Bishop, age 102, passed away on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the Wichita County Nursing Home in Leoti, Kansas. She was born on August 13, 1922, in Brownell, Kansas, to William Roy & Nellie Mae Adkinson Barnett. Lela’s family moved to Scott City when she was 15 years old and stayed there until her retirement. They moved to Texas in 1982, then moved to Arizona in 1985 before she and Richard bought a motorhome in 1987 and traveled until settling in Pharr, Texas in 2000. In 2013, Lela moved back to Scott City, Kansas.

Lela loved dancing, swimming, golf, playing cards (any game), and participating in the Senior Olympics (2002-2011). Lela loved baseball, and she was a devoted Dodgers fan. She enjoyed college basketball but loved to watch just about any sporting event. She was the bookkeeper for Bishop Wholesale and Vending, a member of the First Christian Church, Women’s Business League of Scott City, a Member of the Scott County Golf Course, and the Tip-o-TX Line dancers.

On September 5, 1941, Lela married Richard Thomas Bishop at the Methodist Parsonage in Scott City, Kansas. He passed away on October 6, 2007, in Pharr, Texas.

Lela’s surviving family includes her children, Harry & Martha Bishop of Topeka, Kansas, Karalea Bishop of Leoti, Kansas, Deandra & Chuck Jarret of Seattle, Washington, Dean & Marilyn Bishop of Guymon, Oklahoma, two sisters-in-law, Juanita Barnett of Goodland, Kansas, Martha Lee & Roy McNaught of Florida, Wendel Mott of Illinois, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Lela was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Neal and Wade, one sister, Thelma Miller, and one granddaughter, Amy.

Memorials may be made to the “First Christian Church” or “Park Place” in Care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, KS 67871.

Funeral Services will be held at the First Christian Church of Scott City on Friday, February 28, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors Steve Payne and Rodney Hooper presiding. Interment will follow at the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas.

Public visitation will be on Wednesday, February 26, from 11:00 until 8:00, and Thursday, February 27, from 11:00 until 8:00.
