Jesse Victor Smith, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Jesse was born April 14, 1923 in rural Wichita County, Kansas, the son of Victor R. & Venus B. Case Smith. He had been a lifetime resident of Wichita County and retired in 1984 after 40 years of service as owner/operator of Smith Oil Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War Two in Panama and the South Pacific Theater.

On January 25, 1946 he married Jeanette Lewis in Leoti, Kansas. She survives. Jesse's other surviving family includes- A son and his wife- Reagan & Rita Smith- Leoti, Kansas A daughter and her husband- Amber & Greg Herrman- Hays, Kansas A brother and his wife- Guido & Edith Smith- Torrington, Wyoming Four grandchildren and their spouses- Rebecca & Josh Austin- Stafford, Kansas Jennifer & Matt Werth- Hays, Kansas Remington Smith- Leoti, Kansas Kylee Herrman- Hays, Kansas He was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Smith and a sister, Cloris Case.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in Leoti, Kansas with the Reverend Paul McNall officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery, Leoti, Kansas with full military honors provided by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors detail from Denver, Colorado.
Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the Leoti E.M.T.'s or the Wichita County Amusement Association in care of the funeral home.
