Jean Patrice (Jeanie) Norman Hardy, age 102, passed away on December 14, 2024, at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City, Kansas. She was born on March 11, 1922, in Scott City, Kansas, the daughter of John Wesley Norman and Elsie Mae Beamgard Norman. Jean was a lifetime resident of Scott City, Kansas.
She married the love of her life, Weston V. Hardy, Jr. on October 19, 1940, in Dodge City, Kansas. He passed away on July 12, 2005, in Scott City. They had almost 65 years together.
Jean worked at Inland Utilities Company during World War II and for many years she was an administrative assistant with Fouquet and Associates, Inc. in Scott City. Music was her passion and lifeblood, starting early in her life with performances on the marimba with her two sisters. Jean was a founding member of Community Christian Church (CCC) in Scott City; a founding member of the High Plains Study Club; Scott City Lions Club accompanist beginning in 1939 and later a full member; a member of the Scott County Arts Council, Historical Society, NRA, and NARFE. In 1996 she was named the Scott Community Volunteer of the Year. She played piano and organ for church services at CCC and at Park Lane, for Praisebringers, and for many high school musicals. She accompanied students at ‘Contest’ for many years and played for hundreds of weddings, funerals, and special occasions for over 80 years. Jean was part of a women’s quartet that performed for years throughout Scott City and was a longtime member of the Friday women’s bowling league. The Scott Community High School Vocal Music Room was named after her in 2010. In her later years, she spent much time corresponding via e-mails and on Skype and FaceTime, keeping in touch with loved ones and friends. Her door was always open to welcome residents throughout the Scott City community, all of whom were considered family or friends, and many of whom thought of her as a “second mother.”
She knew without a doubt that Scott City was the best place in the world to live and she enjoyed being a part the city’s growth and change. As one friend told her, “You have definitely made this world a better place with your beautiful smile, encouraging words, your joy and your beautiful music! Bless you for living your years so well, because you made life better for everybody.”
