James Murphy

James Murphy, age 81, passed away at his home in Scott City, Kansas on Friday, May 19, 2006. He was born on May 28, 1924 in Dighton, Kansas, the son of John and Ella Yates Murphy. He was a 1943 graduate of Dighton High School and a US Navy Veteran of World War II. The important part of his business life was as owner of Murphy's Variety Store in Dighton, Kansas. In 1979 he began working for KN Energy in Garden City, Kansas which brought him to Scott City in 1982, retiring in 1989. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton and the Christian Men's Fellowship of Scott City. On August 31, 1947 he married Helen Baker in Dighton, Kansas. On April 24, 1982 he married Madeline Neuenschwander in Scott City, Kansas. She survives. Jim's hobbies included rock hunting, fishing and KU basketball. He never knew a stranger and was always looking for a game of cards or pool. He loved attending college basketball and football games with his sons. Survivors include three sons, Patrick Murphy and his wife Melynn of Denver, Colorado; John Murphy and Dennis Murphy of Wichita, Kansas; one step-daughter Linda Neuenschwander of Denver, Colorado; three brothers, Woodrow Murphy of Fort Dodge, Kansas, Larry Murphy of Wichita, Kansas, Carlos Murphy of Hutchinson, Kansas; one sister, Betty Whiting of Fort Worth, Texas, and five grandchildren Kira Murphy, Brett Murphy, Michelle Murphy, Michael Murphy and step-granddaughter Dara Burwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and six sisters. Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 22, 2006 with Garee Geist officiating. Interment will be in the Dighton Cemetery, Dighton, Kansas. Memorial may be made to Park Lane Nursing Home or First Christian Church in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home. Visitation is at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday and 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday.
