Howard Langley Spitzer passed away on Saturday, June 28th of 2014, at Park Lane nursing home in Scott City, Kansas. He was born on December 7th of 1934 to Isaac Jacob (I.J.) Spitzer (1905-1989) and Pearl Estalene Owen (1905-1957) on the family farm in Scott County. Howard was baptized into the Methodist Church in Dighton, Kansas along with his sisters Carol Louise Spitzer and Virginia Gayle Spitzer in 1945. He grew up on the family farm and spent most of his life in Scott County. He graduated from Scott Community High School in 1952 and attended Kansas State University graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1957. Howard met Dorothy Jane Lodholz at Kansas State and they married on August 6th of 1955 at St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed Church in Kansas City, Missouri.
Howard had a successful career farming and ranching cattle. He was a member of the Wet Walnut Creek Steering Committee, a member of the board of the American Shorthorn Association, a community leader of the Town & County 4-H Club, a Camp Lakeside Trustee, a long time member of Scott City's United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Church Finance Committee. He was an Army Reservist for six years and was a Sergeant when he was honorably discharged.
He especially enjoyed working cross word puzzles, being a K-Stater and traveling the world with Dorothy. They visited all 50 states and 44 countries. Hi favorite trip was always his last. And he thoroughly enjoyed farm life, especially working with cattle. He owned a herd of registered shorthorns and had feedlot cattle.
Howard was a caring and loving husband and father. He was a hard working, honest, kind and forgiving man and a friend to all who knew him. He will be remembered by the many people whose lives he touched. He was most proud of his wife, Dorothy, and his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy, and their daughter: Eleanor (Larry) Strecker of Topeka, Kansas and their son: Phil of Dallas, Texas. He has two grandchildren including Alex Spitzer of Carrboro, North Carolina and Paige Strecker of Manhattan, Kansas. Other survivors include his sister Virginia (Harry) Sharpe of Scott City and his sister-in-law Mary Ellen (Warren) Meyer of Chesterfield, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Carol (Jack) Heckendorn, and his brother-in-law, Jack Heckendorn.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1st, at First United Methodist Church of Scott City with Pastor Dennis Carter celebrating. Burial will be at Scott County Cemetery.
