Ness City, Kansas Harold Lee Smith, age 84, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home in Ness City, Kansas. Mr. Smith was born April 24, 1929 in Albion, Indiana, the son of Thomas & Gertrude Compton Smith. Employed in the oilfield industry, he had been a Ness City resident since 1969 moving from Kingman, Kansas. Mr. Smith served his country in the United States Army during World War Two and then in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Smith was of the Catholic Faith. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. both of Ness City, Kansas. On November 9, 1950 he married Maria Ortiz at Kingman, Kansas. Maria passed away on May 28, 1995 at Ness City, Kansas. Mr. Smith's surviving family includes- Nine Children- Gary Lee & Janice Smith- Kingman, Kansas Mona & Randy Magyar- Hutchinson, Kansas Pancho & Kathy Smith- Hutchinson, Kansas Gertrude & Bernie Summey- Ness City, Kansas Teresa & Phil Williams- Baldwin City, Kansas Rose & Randy Schultz- Ness City, Kansas Morris & Elizabeth Smith- Ness City, Kansas Julia & Steve Erb-Smith- Larned, Kansas Joe Smith- Hays, Kansas One brother- Melvin Smith- Wichita, Kansas One sister- Mary Jo & Dick Bradford Van Buren, Arkansas Forty grandchildren, Fourteen step grandchildren, Thirty Eight great grandchildren, Seventeen step great grandchildren, Eleven step great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, wife and two children, Joseph Smith & Suzanna Smith, three brothers and three sisters precede him in death. A celebration of Mr. Smith's life will be held from 9:30 am until 11:00 am Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Knights Of Columbus Hall, 306 S. Kansas, Ness City, and Kansas. Inurnment will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Kingman, Kansas with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial be given to Ness County Home Health or Cedar Ridge Nursing Home in care of Rose Schultz, 612 South Kansas Ave, Ness City, Kansas 67560.
