Grover James Craig, age 76, died Sunday, January 25, 2009 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. He was born on May 23, 1932 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Robert James and Ottie Florence Martin Craig. A lifetime resident of Garden City he served as the Finney County Sheriff for 27 years retiring in 1997. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a Deputy U.S. Marshall for 30 years.
He was a member of the Community Congregational Church, the VFW, the American Legion, the Kansas Sheriffs Association and the Kansas Peace Officers Association. He was a Hot wheels collector, liked to watch sports on television and attend ball games. He coached softball for many years, enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed coffee daily at McDonalds with his friends.
Survivors Include: His Wife, Wanda Jo Craig of the home; One Son, Jon Craig of Garden City, Kansas; One Daughter, Jan Kennedy of Garden City, Kansas; Three Brothers, Martin Craig of Topeka, Kansas; Virgil Craig of Garden City, Kansas and Richard Craig of Sun Lakes, Arizona; Two Sisters, Bettie Clemann of Westminster, Colorado and Ruphell Pilcher of Rogers, Arkansas; Three Granddaughters and Two Grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ronald Craig, and a sister, Bobbie Weber.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Friday January 30, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Garden City, Kansas.
The casket will be closed but the public may stop by Price & Sons Funeral Home from 10:00am-5:00pm on Thursday to sign the register book.
Interment will be held in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Craig Memorial Education Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City, Kansas.
