Fern Lucille Greathouse, age 87, died Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. She was born on November 15, 1924 on a farm northeast of Garden City in Finney County, Kansas the daughter of Ralph Goodman and Viola Fern Collins Greathouse. A lifetime resident of Garden City, Kansas, Fern graduated from Wichita State University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and then did post graduate work at The University of Kansas. Fern was an Elementary School teacher in both rural Finney County Schools and Garden City then finished her teaching career in Prairie Village, Kansas from 1957 until 1971. She retired in 1989 from St. Catherine Hospital as the Director of Social Services & Director of Pastoral Care.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church Women, the Friends of the Zoo, Tumbleweed Festival, and the High Plains Horticultural Society all of Garden City, Kansas.
Survivors Include her Two Sisters - Evelyn Phillips of Prairie Village, Kansas, Beth Tedrow of Garden City, Kansas, One Brother - Ronald Greathouse of Lee's Summit, Missouri, One Brother-in-law - Lloyd Joyce of Garden City, Kansas, One Sister-in-law - Pearl Greathouse of Hays, Kansas, One Close Friend - Erma Adamson of Garden City, Kansas, 8 Nieces, 7 Nephews, 14 Great Nieces, 11 Great Nephews, 11 Great Great Nieces & 12 Great Great Nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother - Ralph A. Greathouse, one sister - Pauline G. Joyce, a nephew - Gregg Warren Phillips and a great niece - Kathryn Greathouse.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas with the Rev. David Bell presiding.
Friends may call from 3:00pm-8:00pm on Sunday and 10:00am-8:00pm on Monday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas. The family will be present on Monday from 5:00pm-7:00pm.
Interment will be held in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the Ralph & Fern Greathouse Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.
