Eugene Rose

Scott City J. Eugene "Gene" Rose, age 83, passed away at the Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City Kansas on Friday, April 9, 2010. He was born on May 14, 1926 on a farm 20 miles northwest of Scott City, Kansas to Roy and Iva Crane Rose. He was raised on the family farm. He attended Beaver Creek School through the 8th grade and the graduated from Scott County High School in 1944. Gene continued helping his father with farming until he enlisted in the Navy in August of 1945. He was sent to Kobe Harbor in Japan where he helped sweep mines from the ocean. He was then sent to Hawaii where he was assigned to Harbor Patrol. Gene enjoyed driving those boats. Gene returned to the United States in 1946. He began courting Ardis Rathburn that same year. They were married March 27, 1947 in Brewster, Kansas. Gene and Ardis lived in Oakley, Kansas during the winter months and back to Scott City to farm during the farming season. Three sons were born to Gene and Ardis: Steve, Ron, and Gary. They lived in a soddy on the Paulsen place until January of 1961 when Gene was called to the ministry. At that time, they moved to Kansas City where Gene attended Calvary Bible College. They lived there for five years until he graduated. Gene then went on staff as the Christian Service Director. Gene and Ardis returned to western Kansas in 1968 when his brother Conard was killed. They returned to help with the farming operation. The Roses then moved to Peoria, Illinois in 1972. Gene was Superintendent of Victory Acres which was a recovery program of the Peoria Rescue Mission. Gene counseled men with addiction issues. The program involved a work program on a farm outside of Peoria. Gene and Ardis spent twenty years in this ministry. In 1993, Gene and Ardis returned to western Kansas where Gene helped with the farming operation once again. Gene was a committed member of the First Baptist Church teaching Sunday School and Bible Studies. He also was involved in Bible Studies at the nursing home. Gene loved farming and working with his hands and teaching the bible. Gene was preceded in death by his Parents â Roy & Iva Rose; Three Brothers â Conard, Bruce, and Lyle Rose; and Two Sisters â Ona Mae Marmon and Selaura Campbell. Gene is survived by his wife, Ardis of 81 years; his three sons: Steve Rose (Linda) of Joplin, Missouri, Ron Rose (Cindy) of Denton, Texas, and Gary Rose (Kenna) of Gillette, Wyoming; his three grandsons: Ben Rose of Gillette, Wyoming; Cody Rose of Maryland; Casey Rose (Shawna) of Krum, Texas; one granddaughter, Joanna Rose of Gillette, Wyoming. Gene is also survived by his brother, Bernard Rose (Barbara) of Scott City and his sisters, Dorothy Evans of Brewster, and Royla Radina (Jim) of Amarillo, Texas. Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Scott City, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 with the Rev. Kyle Evans presiding. Interment will be in the Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas. Memorials may be given to the Park Lane Nursing Home % Price & Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2010, and 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.
