Ethel Mae Hooper, age 93, died Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at the Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on September 4, 1916 in Alma, Kansas the daughter of Benjamin Joseph & Julia Alma Casey Munzer. She had been a resident of Garden City since 1949, moving to Wichita, Kansas in 2004. An Eskridge High School graduate of 1933, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Emporia State University in 1951, and her Master's Degree in Art Education from Ft. Hays State University in 1963. She taught school for 32 years, the last 21 of them at Abe Hubert Junior High School. She and her husband were foster parents to 47 children.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she painted the original scenery for the Living Christmas, and was the volunteer organizer and manager of the Methodist Used Clothing Center during its existence. She had also served as a board member of the first State Foster Parents Association, president of the Soroptimist Club, and was a member of the Garden City Kiwanis Club, Kansas Kiwanis Foundation, GCCC Endowment Association, Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo, Finney County Historical Society, Friends of the Finney County Sand Sage Bison Range, the Senior Center and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Garden City.
On May 29, 1941 she married Edwin Spencer Hooper in Alta Vista, Kansas. He survives.
Other Survivors Include: One Son, Jim Hooper of Wichita, Kansas; Five Grandchildren and Ten Great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Annette Hooper Domitz, a brother, Claude Munzer, and two sisters, Cora Veenschoten and Ruby Munzer.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas with Rev. Brenda Fluellen presiding.
Friends may call from 4:00-8:00pm Friday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City. The family will be in attendance to receive friends from 6-8pm.
Interment will be held at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.
The family requests memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church or the GCCC Ethel Hooper Art Supplies Scholarship, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City, Kansas.
