Dorothy Mae Hawkins, age 76, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was born on September 15, 1935 in Bluff City, Kansas the daughter of Louis and Hedvika Jelinek Baker. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas where she was a soloist with the Purple Robed Choir and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. Dorothy later earned her Masters Degree in Counseling from Emporia State University. Dorothy worked as a teacher and school counselor for 37 years moving to Garden City in 2001.
She was a member and circle leader of the First United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Finney County Retired Persons Association, the Kansas National Education Association and the National Education Association.
On December 27, 1963 she married William Hawkins in Caldwell, Kansas. He died April 6, 1997 in Morrowville, Kansas.
Survivors Include:
One Daughter, Jennifer (& Paul) White of Kansas City, Missouri;
One Brother, Robert (& Betty) Baker of Bluff City, Kansas;
Three Grandsons, Trail, William & Gregor White of Kansas City, Missouri;
One Nephew, H.D. (& Mickey) Mayo of Bluff City, Kansas and
One Niece, Wanda (& Bryon) Wencl of Bluff City, Kansas;
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a Sister, Kathryn Mayo.
Memorial Services will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas.
There will be no calling times.
Burial will be held in the DeVore Cemetery in Bluff City, Kansas.
