Garden City, Kansas Charles Norwood, age 82, died on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Via Christi Village on the Plain in Wichita, Kansas. He was born January 8, 1938 in Texas. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and numerous publications in Agronomx. Charles earned is PHD in Agronomy. Dr. Charles A. Norwood is recognized for 29 years of service to Kansas State University and the Southwest Research Extension Center. Charles joined the faculty as an agronomist at the Garden City Experiment Station as it was then known, in February 1972. He received a B.S. in agriculture from Texas A&I University at Kingsville in 1961, an M.S in agronomy in 1969, and a PH.D. in soil science in 1972 both from Oklahoma State University. He served in the U.S.. Air Force from 1961 to 1963, and worked for ARS in Weslaco, Texas from 1963-1967. His research was concentrated on dryland cropping systems and limited irrigation for southwest Kansas. He conducted numerous dryland crop rotation studies with wheat, grain sorghum, corn, soybean, and sunflower, and has published several papers on the subject. He has published research on the advantage of no tillage, and has demonstrated that dryland corn is a viable alternative to grain sorghum in southwest Kansas. In his retirement Charles enjoyed restoring International Harvester tractors. On April 15, 1974 he married Sue A. Norwood in Valley Center, Kansas. She preceded him in death on October 17, 2017. Survivors include: Sister in law Marjorie Bryan of Provo, Utah Nieces Sandy Nelson of Niceville, Flordia Peggy Sorenson of Sagle, Idaho Becky Henderson of Springville, Utah Nancy Shuessler of Wichita, Kansas Mary Woydziak of Rose Hill, Kansas Nephew Warren Schuessler, Jr. of Chesterfield, Missouri He preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother. Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 2, 2020 at the Valley View Cemetery. Open calling will be from 11 am - 8 pm on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Price & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to the First United Methodist Church in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St. Garden City, Kansas 67846.
