Scott Showalter

Scott M. Showalter, 87, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at his home in Garden City, Kansas after an extended illness. Scott was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on October 11, 1932 to Clark M. Showalter and Bertha Lors (Smith) Rhodes. Scott spent his summers with his grandparents on their farm in Little River, Kansas, until he was 12 years old and spoke often of how wonderful it was to grow up there. Scott Joined the Marines in January, 1951 and Served in Korea. He found out later that his brother Jack arrived in Korea on the same boat that Scott returned home on. Scott was offered the purple heart but chose not to receive it as he did not want his family to receive the telegram stating that he had been wounded in action. Scott married Sherrie Joan Kennedy on March 23, 1956, in Clayton New Mexico and just recently celebrated 64 years of marriage. Scott and Joan moved to Garden City in 1966. Scott started Triple S Steel in 1966 with a $1000 loan from his beloved grandmother and went on to run several successful business’s. He was most known for building cattle feed-mills and most of those feed-mills are still running today. He spent several years in Saudi Arabia building grain storage for the Royal Family. Scott retired from Scott and Associates which he owned for years in January, 2015. Scott was an avid bow hunter and was one of the original 100 members of the Pope and Young Club and was recently notified that he would be inducted into their Hall of Fame. He was a member of the VFW of Garden City. He and Joan also enjoyed traveling different places in the world and they loved fishing together. Scott is survived by his wife, Sherrie J. Showalter of the home, 3 sons, Sheldon (Cheri) Showalter of Garden City, Shane (Sue) Showalter of Holcomb, Kansas and Shea (Charity) Showalter, Colorado Springs, Colorado, one sister Shirley Halsey of Tempe, Arizona, two sister in laws, Emma Showalter and Barbara Kennedy-Drew, both of Garden City, Kansas, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jack. Private burial has taken place and he will be honored at a Celebration of Life later as the State of Kansas re-opens.
