Garden City, Kansas Lewis H. "Sass" Sassaman, age 84, died Friday, November 6, 2009 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born January 27, 1925 in Borough of New Berlin, Pennsylvania the son of Carl E. and Mary Nagle Sassaman. While serving at the Naval Air Station in Hutchinson, Kansas during WWII, he met Doris Jean Horning of Wakita, Oklahoma. They were married on Christmas Eve, 1945 in Anthony, Kansas. They lived in Pennsylvania and in Wakita and Ponca City, Oklahoma before settling in Kansas. Sass managed lumber yards in Liberal and Wichita, Kansas prior to moving to Garden City in 1964 where he managed and was co-owner of the Garden Belle Lumber Company. He was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church and the American Legion both of Garden City, Kansas. Sass enjoyed traveling, watching all types of sporting events and visiting with his friends across the country. Most important, however, was his family. Survivors Include: His Companion, Sharon Englebright of Garden City, Kansas; Two Sons, Lonnie Sassaman of Garden City, Kansas, and Randy Sassaman of Phoenix, Arizona; One Sister, Mary Ellen Spangler of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania; Six Grandchildren, and Seven Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother, Melvin Sassaman. Funeral Services will be held at 2:30pm on Monday, November 9, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas with the Rev. David Bell presiding. Interment will be in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas. There will be no calling times at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the First United Methodist Church, the St. James Lutheran Church or the American Legion Elevator Project all in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.
